The Upper Room Daily Devotion | Romans 4:1-5, 13-17

Romans 4:1-5, 13-17 is a passage that speaks about faith and righteousness. Paul uses the example of Abraham to illustrate that righteousness comes through faith, not through works.

As we read this passage, we are reminded that our relationship with God is based on faith, not on our own efforts. Verse 4 says, “Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation.” This verse reminds us that if we try to earn our salvation through good works, we are missing the point. We cannot earn our way into God’s favor, but rather, we receive it as a gift through faith in Jesus Christ.

Verse 16 says, “Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham.” This verse reminds us that the promise of salvation is not just for the Jewish people who followed the law, but also for anyone who has faith in Jesus Christ.

As we reflect on this passage, let us be encouraged to put our faith in Jesus Christ and not in our own efforts. Let us trust in the gift of grace that God has given us through Jesus, and let us live in the freedom and joy that comes from knowing that our salvation is secure in Him. And let us strive to live a life of faith, like Abraham, trusting in God’s promises and walking in obedience to His will.
