The Upper Room Daily Devotion | Joel 2:1-2, 12-17

Joel 2:1-2, 12-17 is a call to repentance and return to the Lord. The passage describes a time of great distress and judgement, but also a time of mercy and restoration for those who turn to God with all their heart.

As we read this passage, we are reminded that God is a holy and just God who cannot tolerate sin, but He is also a God of love and mercy who is willing to forgive and restore those who repent and turn to Him.

Verse 12 says, “Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” This is a call to repentance that is open to all, regardless of their past mistakes or failures. God is not interested in outward displays of religiosity, but He wants us to turn to Him with sincerity and humility.

The passage also speaks of the importance of corporate repentance. Verse 15 says, “Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly.” It is not just about individuals turning to God, but also about communities coming together to seek God’s forgiveness and mercy.

As we reflect on this passage, let us examine our own hearts and ask God to show us any areas where we need to repent and turn to Him. Let us also pray for our communities and for our nation, that we would turn back to God with sincerity and humility, and experience His mercy and restoration.
